The Virginia Tech University
DeriekW. Crouse, 39, of Christiansburg, Va. wasshot and killed Thursday while performing a routine traffic stop when someonewalked up to the officer's car and shot him.
The shooting left two people dead includingCrouse -- in the deadliest shooting at the Blacksburg , Va.
Crouse joined the school's police force in
2007 and was trained as a crisis intervention officer and firearms instructorand was a member of the Virginia Tech Police Emergency Response Team, accordingto officials.

Crouse was also a U.S. Army veteran andworked at the New River Valley Jail and the Montgomery County Sheriff'sDepartment, officials said.
"My heart goes out to his family whowill surely feel most keenly, in the days and months and years ahead, theprofound loss that today's events have brought to pass," said VirginiaTech University President Charles W. Steger said in a statement posted on theschool's website Thursday. "We extend our deepest sympathies andcondolences to his family and to his colleagues in the police department."
Police said they believe this is the firsttime a Virginia Tech officer has been shot in the line of duty.
